Spray Painted Bottle - FAIL!

We have had these pretty bottles for like 7 years and during this time they’ve gone through a LOT of transitions. First they were used as planters but soon there developed a line of salt deposit on the water level giving this ugly look, plus one of the bottles started leaking. Then, we tried to incorporate them somewhere indoors, but, with time each of the looks worn out.
Few months back, I tried to give them a new look with some yarn and with time even that failed.

Despite all these failures, I don’t feel like throwing these bottles away cuz they are one of a kind. Don’t you agree?

So, to bring out the spring I decided to paint them and use them as center-piece.

And the result was failure and success.

Failure when I attempted the first bottle.

There was actually a point where I felt like throwing this bottle on the ground so it would shatter into pieces. That’s how frustrated I was after spending 2 hours of spraying paint and sanding. But the even coat would JUST NOT show!

And then I was struck with a realisation! OMG I didn’t use a primer!!!!

So I decided to move on to the next bottle and leave this bottle to be dealt with acetone later.

On the next bottle I first applied a coat of white paint and then used yellow on it.

And the result you ask?

Major success!

Another area where I went wrong was while spraying my first bottle I concentrated on each area individually. Like for seconds I would keep spraying at one point with all the force.

But on the second bottle, I kept my hands light and circled them all around so that the coats were even, I hope you know what I mean, say something like a fly buzzing, maybe. 😕

See? What a smooth finish!

Two things I learnt from this project:

1) Importance of primers

2) Spray the object from a particular distance and spray one coat all over with light pressure. Let the first coat dry and then spray the next coat.

You must be wondering what are the red marks. Well, that was another experiment. Initially, when I had this project in mind, I had thought of stamping flower patterns at the bottom of the bottles. Since, the first bottle was already wrecked I thought of trying the stamping experiment on it first. But, as you can see it was a major failure too.

That’s when I came up with the idea of using stencils which turned out pretty neat. You can see that in the third picture. So the bottles still have some touch ups to undergo. And then I’ll show you the complete centre-piece. 😀
