Assalam alikum girls! Javeriya here and today I’ll be showing you how to make DIY abaya from a blouse sewing pattern! Cool right? Abayas make the perfect outerwear garment and it’s a perfect Islamic garment. You can never have enough abayas if you are an abaya person. You need to have one in every style. Through this tutorial you can make another new abaya to add to your collection.

When I saw this pattern on Lekala I knew it had potential to be a lovely DIY abaya and here it is! What do you girls think? I took a bold step this time and went for something other than black. I’m not sure how I’m gonna step out in this yet. Haha.

DIY Abaya from Blouse Pattern Tutorial

Other than the pattern pieces you would also need to cut out a skirt piece and extra sleeves.

So, to cut the skirt I measured the length from my hips till the ankle. The width is the same as the width of the fabric.

First off, download your pattern and place them together. You might have noticed these dotted lines on each side, so what you gotta do is just cut them from one side only. I’ve left the frist line as it is and for the second line I’m cutting off the edges from top and side. And then I stuck it together. So go ahead and do this for all your pieces and cut the patterns out.

Now it’s time to cut the fabric. To do that, you gotta make sure that the line which says straight of the grain is parallel to your salvage. So place your pieces on your fabric in that way, trace and cut. Here I’m cutting the band piece, you must have noticed that I have reduced the length of the band to just 7 inch and I’m gonna cut it into half to make the front and the back piece.

I also cut out two pieces for the skirt, this will make the bottom of my abaya. The length is from the waist till the ankle and the width is just the width of the fabric. And I’ve also cut out another portion of sleeve because the pattern sleeve just ends at the elbow so I had to use a seprate piece from elbow till the wrists. The top part of the sleeve should be the same length as the one in the pattern. Make sure you label all your pieces as soon as you cut them to avoid confusion.

Before we start go ahead and mark your seam allowance on the machine, using a tape. The pattern says to use 0.5 inch seam allowance so I’m gonna mark it here.

Okay, now it’s time to sew. The sewing part is pretty easy and simple.

First take the front piece, and sew a basting stitch all along, following the mark on the pattern piece. Next, gather the stitches so that the piece fits into the center piece perfectly and sew it together. Pin and sew the side to the center. Repeat for the other side. My front is done, next, I’m gonna press the seams towards the center as mentioned in the pattern. I also finished off the seam using zig zag stitch.

Now repeat the same steps for the back pieces.

And next, sew the shoulder and side seams of front and back pieces together.

Now it’s time to press the seams. Press the both the shoulder and side seams towards the back.

Next, sew the bands together along the side seam and keep it aside.

And then take your sleeves, press and fold the hem from the narrow side.

Next, sew the sides of the sleeve together.

Now it’s time to attach the sleeve to the top.

Pin the right sides together. Start off by matching the seams together and then sew.

Okay this is the second last step. First, do a basting stitch at the bottom and then gather the stitches so that they are the same size as the band and then pin the top to the band and sew.

Now, sew the skirt pieces together along the side seam.

Next, sew a basting stitch at the top and gather so that it fits the size of the belt. Now pin the belt to the skirt and sew.

Yahoo! We’re done with the final step. You are all ready to flaunt your new abaya! Oh, don’t forget to serge or overlock all your seams.
