HELLO and as salam alikum wrt wbt. Welcome abroad! I know why you are here and I want to help you so that you may not be from one of us wondering what on earth is life like at IIUM Kuantan campus so far away from the capital city KL.
You might have found a lot of info about the IIUM Gombak campus, but these sites rarely contain details about the Kuantan campus. I myself got to know about it in the very end that my Kulliyah will not be in the main campus and that too from wikipedia.
So let’s begin. Here’s a shot of the main entrance:
IIUM Kuantan Guide for New Students
And, the list of Kulliyahs that are there in the IIUM Kuantan campus.
- Kulliyah of Medicine (KOM)
- Kulliyah of Dentistry (KOD – a brand new and super awesome building which makes all the other kulliyah students green :P))
- Kulliyah of Allied Health Science (KAHS)
- Kulliyah of Pharmacy (KOP)
- Kulliyah of Science (KOS – where I belong)
Here’s a pic of KOP
(A shot of dentistry building from my very first days here)
As 3 of these kulliyahs only accept sponsored international students hence, the no of international students is WAY TOO LESS in this campus (probably around 100-150), which gives a rise to a lot of problems for international students in this campus.
Official stuff:
Office of Campus Director
This building is the one that you would see right after entering the campus. There’s only one place that’s important to us here and that’s the IT office on the first floor. 😛 That’s because that’s the place you would have to go to to register your laptops and get the software to use the internet. And you might have to go again and again to file complains because the net here is quite slow.
One Stop Student Center OSC
There is no rector building here in IIUM Kuantan, instead we have the OSC One stop student center (shown in the picture above) where you can find the finance division, student development unit, and all that. They have a so called Arab restaurant run by a really perverted and lazy guy who knows nothing about cooking. So international food here is impossible to find.
They also have a PC shop here where you can get your laptops fixed, hardware and software.
A bookstore, a shop where you can get your lab-coats from, and a printing shop.
The library is also nothing compared to what they have in Gombak, yet its good enough. My friends go there almost everyday to study but again I’m super lazy 😉
Transport and Fun
The worst part of living in Kuantan is that there are no proper buses here to take you to town. The bus (500) which by chance comes, takes you to the bus station in the town from where you can either walk to the malls or take a bus to them.
What we do is, we book delivery cars, 3-4 girls at a time, which also helps in splitting the transport cost. There are some really nice girls here who would charge you 6-9 RM and take you to wherever you want. You can tell them the time and place and they’ll take you there. Either the malls(there are only 3 malls in Kuantan- East Coast Mall with aeon, Berjaya Mall with Giant and Kuantan Parade, which is a local mall), or the post office, banks, or the beach (the best part of living in Kuantan).
They also pick and drop you from the Kuantan Bus Terminal from where you get the buses to all across Malaysia.
Living
There are 2 mahallas here inside the campus of IIUM Kuantan currently, and both belong to the girls. They are Mahalla Maimoonah and Mahalla Talha. The boys live in the mahallas outside the campus. There is one more mahalla for girls that is also outside the campus, which is Mahalla Tabari.
(A shot of Mahalla Maimoonah by mongface blog. There’s a lake with a small garden where you can have a picnic when whether permits).
But, all this will change from the new year that is from September 2014, everyone will shift into the new Mahallas they are building. Oh I’m sooooooooooo excited about that and I just want to live on the top most floor that is no 10.
And these are some of the buildings of new mahalla.
The news says that these mahalla will have parking space for 1200 cars.
Sports Complex
Here’s a small view of the sports complex. In Gombak campus they have two separate ones for male and female but here they share one. This is the front view of the stadium with a football ground as well as running track.
After the stadium there’s another building after this which has the facilities for indoor games such as volley ball and all (don’t know much about it because I have never been inside :P), as well as a swimming pool.
The sports complex is quite far and my first time there was after one whole semester, I know I’m super lazy 😛 but this semester I’m determined to get fit and swimming is the best exercise. They have buses from 5pm to 10 pm from all the mahallas to the sports complex.
That’s all you need to know about before coming here. If you have any questions you can always comment and ask them or hit me an e-mail at [email protected] 🙂
The funniest thing is, I dislike that place so much that literally WHENEVER I get a chance I runaway to KL, and as I type this post KL is where I am. 😉
