Tensed and worried, with prayers on our lips we entered the exam hall and took the seats. Murmurs of “all the best” and “Oh my I’m so worried” were heard all over the place. As soon as the announcements were over and the words “you may begin now” were heard, the papers were flipped open and the everyone, including me, was set to work.
The first part was MCQs, something I’m not very fond of. Q1, 2 and 3 seemed pretty easy, but then I came across Q4, much more complicated, and required quite a lot of thinking. The rest of the questions were a mixture of difficult and easy, even though 1 or 2 were out of topic, I could do them. But when I reached Q14, I was gonna almost cry! Q14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, FIVE freaking questions that came from topics we had never studied in class. And not just that, there was another 4 marks long essay question from the same topic and that makes a total of NINE marks questions to which I was about to lose marks no matter what.
Like there are some questions from topics that you have studied, and are there to confuse you so there are still chances of getting some marks in them. And then there are questions about which you are 100% clueless and you’re 100% gonna lose marks in them. These nine marks questions fall in the second category!
Confused and distressed, I was getting pissed at myself for not working hard enough and somehow managed to finish the exam. Nevertheless, I managed to finish the paper somehow, and guess what I found at the end of the exam? Luckily, NO ONE had studied these topics either.
For two days this incident bugged me, because I had a positive feeling about doing good in this exam, and losing 9 marks just like that meant going down one grade. I didn’t wanna lose a grade so easily just because we got questions out of topics. I suggested to my classmates that we go and discuss the matter with the lecturer and that maybe she might agree on helping us. But, no one seemed to agree except one. Both of us dwelled on the topic for another day, calculating the highs and lows. In the end the gain seemed more rewarding than the loss. The least, the lecturer would do was say no, but, what if SHE SAID YES?!!? I had even discussed the topic with my best friend and even her reply was negative. But, I just wanted to try, because Allah helps those who help themselves. Hanging onto this quote, we made up our mind, we were going, no matte what.
The next day at 2:15 pm I rang up the lecturer and asked for an appointment. Believe it or not, even at that moment I didn’t feel like going at all, but then she answered the phone and the meeting time was set.
As we made our way to the office, we had very little hopes, we greeted the lecturer and took our seats, prayer in our hearts, for success of the meeting. To our surprise, our lecturer was super kind and guess WHAT SHE SAID!?!?
She ACTUALLY ACCEPTED her mistake of overlooking the said topic and agreed to help us!!
You have no idea the happiness I experienced at THAT moment! I was shocked because the conversation turned out into something good so easily, no arguments, no whining, all clean and the victory (you can say) was OURS! Whoop whoop!
There are three things I learnt from that day. One: it never hurts to try. Two: To always think positive, and hope for the best. Three: never let go so easily, without trying.
Had we been all scared and hopeless we would’ve easily missed our chance of gaining back our grades, but there was this tiny thing inside us that kept us pushing forward and I’m so thankful for it!!
A happy end to a sad story. So always remember friends, it never hurts to try. 🙂
